When you log in to Canvas, your account is protected by something called a session timeout. A session timeout means that after a set period of inactivity, Canvas automatically logs you out. This is a standard security feature used in nearly all online systems (from banking to email) to help protect your personal information and prevent unauthorized use if you walk away from your computer without logging out.

At Yavapai College, we’ve recently reduced the Canvas Learning Management System session timeout to 24 hours. That means if you remain logged in but inactive, Canvas will now automatically sign you out after 24 hours.

Why the Change?

  • Improved Security – Reducing the timeout window protects accounts while reducing the chances of someone else accessing Canvas if a device is left unattended.
  • Fraud Reduction – A shorter timeout period makes it harder for fraudulent or unauthorized activity to occur in Canvas.
  • Balance of Security and Convenience – This update provides a user experience without frequent interruptions, while keeping student and course data safe.

What This Means for You

  • You’ll stay logged in for up to 24 hours.
  • After 24 hours of inactivity, Canvas will automatically log you out, and you’ll need to sign in again.
  • As always, logging out when you’re finished editing or grading is the best practice, especially if you’re on a shared or public computer.

This change is a small but important step toward keeping Canvas secure for both faculty and students.
